GB News is consulting skin experts about the best strategies to achieve different beauty goals. This week, two experts have told GB News why red light therapy is a genuine innovation backed by science, not just hype

The beauty industry is awash with recommendations for younger-looking skin, owing to significant scientific advances. LED and red light therapy, in particular, have become popular for various skin and hair concerns across the UK.

The non-invasive therapies use specific light wavelengths to address issues ranging from acne and wrinkles to hair loss.

While the jury is still out on the benefits of at-home devices versus in-office treatments, experts agree that promising results come from correct and consistent use.

Dr Ross Kopelman, Hair Transplant Surgeon at Kopelman Hair Restoration, told GB News that LED therapy can be valuable for treating acne, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.

"While it's not a standalone cure, consistent use can help reduce breakouts, improve skin tone, and soften fine lines," he said.

For scalp concerns, it can reduce inflammation and support healthier follicle function.

Dr Kopelman emphasised there is "a solid and growing body of scientific research" supporting LED therapy.

"Multiple studies have shown it can improve collagen density, decrease inflammation, and speed up wound healing," he explained.

For hair, clinical trials demonstrate that red light therapy can increase hair density and thickness, particularly in early-stage hair loss.

Board-certified dermatologist and co-founder of RedliteX, David Johnson, explained that red light therapy works by using specific light to penetrate the skin deeply.

"The light improves the functioning of your cells, causing them to produce more collagen," he told GB News.

It also increases blood flow, helping acne heal faster and evening out dark spots.

When choosing between professional and at-home devices, both experts agree either can be effective depending on use.

"Professional devices deliver higher energy levels and typically give faster results," Dr Kopelman noted.

Johnson concurred: "Professional treatments are stronger, yet home devices can work well if applied consistently."

The key is proper and regular application.

Is LED Therapy safe?

LED therapy is generally very safe with minimal side effects, according to Dr Kopelman.

"The most common issues I've seen are mild skin irritation or dryness from overuse," he said.

But both experts advised caution for those with sensitive skin or conditions like rosacea, eczema, or psoriasis.

"While it's generally safe, using it incorrectly can cause irritation," Johnson warned.

Johnson believes red light therapy is a genuine innovation backed by science, not just hype.

"There are many studies that show it can make your skin smoother, more elastic, and even-toned," he said.

He remains optimistic about the technology's future potential to help more people feel confident in their skin.
