Basic lifestyle factors like sleep can impact how quickly the skin ages

With centuries of research into anti-ageing science, we now have more options than ever when it comes to preserving youthful skin.

Michelle Silva, a 50-year-old content creator, claims the most effective methods are free or simple.

She recently posted a clip listing the simple lifestyle habits that can help people knock 15 years off their appearance.

“Number one, stay away from the sun,” she shared. “Get an effective mineral sunscreen, and always wear a hat and sunglasses when outdoors."

It’s become increasingly apparent that sunscreen is not just for beach days, since dermatologists emphasised it is a crucial role in preventing skin ageing.

In fact, it is believed that approximately 80 per cent of skin changes associated with ageing are caused by the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Sunscreen has been dubbed as the best skin care product for slowing down signs of ageing because it effectively blocks UV rays and prevents sunburns.

“Number two is getting eight to nine hours of sleep, it’s called beauty rest for a reason,” added Michelle.

“Getting at least eight hours of sleep gives your skin the best chance to repair, regenerate and stay youthful.

“Prioritising sleep is one of the simplest and most effective ways to maintain a radiant and youthful complexion."

There are several ways poor sleep can accelerate signs of ageing like wrinkles and skin elasticity.

Studies have shown that not only does poor sleep quality boost the appearance of eyebags, but it also enhances dull or greying hair and other visible signs of premature ageing.

GP Dr Nisa Aslam, a skin specialist from Hada Labo Tokyo, previously told GB News about the importance of sleep for the skin.

"It is during sleep that our skin recovers and rejuvenates, so making sure we get enough good quality sleep is vital for skin health."

“Number three is skincare," added Michelle. "Vitamin C, retinol, moisturiser and sunscreen - those are the basics."

There are several types of retinoids, ranging from over-the-counter retinol to prescription tretinoin. One thing they all have in common is vitamin A.

The vitamin A derivatives of these products have been thoroughly researched over the past three decades and studies have produced ample evidence of their anti-ageing benefits.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, retinol increases skin cell production and helps unclog pores.

"Retinol also exfoliates your skin and increases collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving your skin a fresher, plump appearance," explained the health body.
