Looking youthful remains a top priority for many and looking after your skin is a crucial tool in the battle against visible ageing.

It is no secret that a well-planned skin care routine can deliver significant results in maintaining a more youthful appearance but according to one expert, women should opt for professional-grade skin care over high-street brands when budget allows.

Aesthetics practitioner and skin care expert Amish Patel from Intrigue Cosmetic Clinic suggested that investing in the right skin care products and routines can pay "dividends in years to come".

He said: "Choose professional-grade skin care over high-street brands if your budget allows. Professional skin care is more potent in its formulation to deliver better results."

He advocates for a basic skin care routine, noting that simplicity increases the likelihood of maintaining consistency.

The expert said: "Keep your skin care routine simple; this way, you are also more likely to stick to it,

"Start with a cleanser, ideally with some exfoliating properties to help shed dead skin that can leave your skin looking dull. A glycolic acid-based cleanser is ideal as it cleans the skin, lifts dead skin cells, and hydrates simultaneously."

Amish encouraged women to use a moisturiser or a hydrating serum and a high-factor SPF. Retinol and some form of vitamin A cream are also handy to use at night as part of a bedtime skin care routine.

The expert addressed the growing trend of home beauty technology, particularly devices like LED masks and microneedling tools.

"I am a big fan of home microneedling, but make sure you use an appropriate high-quality serum afterwards to reap the benefits. The rise in home beauty tech has seen everything from LED masks to microneedling tools but as with anything, there is good and bad, so do your research," said Amish.

He persuaded his clients to give it a go, adding: "They have seen fantastic results in plumper, more youthful-looking skin."

For women who want to go one step further with their skin care, the expert advised them to eat a healthy diet by cutting out things like alcohol and sugar.

He said: "I recommend that clients choose the 80/20 per cent rule. Be good 80 per cent of the time, and you can still indulge 20 per cent of the time with no real negative impact on your skin.

"My last tip is to drink plenty of water. You should drink at least two litres of water daily."
