With the right tools and techniques, makeup can have a transformative effect on the skin, accentuating your best bits, hiding imperfections and disguising signs of ageing.
However, the most result-worthy makeup routine starts long before you apply your foundation or concealer.
According to an expert, creating the perfect canvas is crucial and the importance of pre-makeup skin care should not be overlooked - especially by mature women.
Biochemist and certified cosmetologist-aesthetician at OnSkin Valerie Aparovich claimed that looking after your skin is the first step to a great makeup look.
'Start by gently cleansing your skin with a sulfate-free cleanser'
GETTY IMAGESSpeaking exclusively to GB News, she revealed how women over 50 can prep the skin for "smooth and seamless application". With these strategies, she claimed they can achieve a "more youthful, dewy finish".
Valerie stated: "Over 50, the skin commonly experiences increased dryness, tightness, laxity and wrinkling, which can challenge makeup.
"Following a tailored skin care routine will help prevent the face from looking overly textured or prematurely aged after applying complexion products."
Valerie swears by a "powerhouse" product that promises "multiple beauty benefits", telling GB News she "couldn't live without it".
As well as this, she stresses that women should prioritise cleansing, exfoliating, toning, moisturising and diligent use of SPF.
"Start by gently cleansing your skin with a sulfate-free cleanser," the expert instructed. "The squeaky-clean feeling that sulfates provide usually comes from stripping the skin of its beneficial oils and moisture."
While it doesn't need to be done daily, regular exfoliation is also key to maintaining a fresh, bright complexion.
Valerie recommended using an enzyme peel once a week or before a special event, explaining: "This mild chemical exfoliator is well-tolerated even by dry and sensitive skin types, helping to remove dead cells and reduce flakiness and rough patches without compromising the skin's barrier or causing irritation."
The skin care guru also advised women over 50 to incorporate a hydrating toner into their skin care regime, opting for products infused with plant-derived extracts like aloe vera, green tea, ginseng, centella or calendula.
She stated: "It will help replenish moisture in the skin’s outermost layer and increase its antioxidant capacity while soothing and comforting."
Next, they should apply a moisturiser rich in humectants like hyaluronic acid, collagen and peptides, to "attract and retain water molecules in the skin", and emollients like ceramides and shea butter to "lock in hydration and nourish your canvas".
Valerie said: "Moisturisers crafted for 24-hour hydration will help the skin maintain optimal moisture levels, creating a smoother, plumper texture with a healthy glow - perfect for a seamless makeup application that lasts longer and is more comfortable to wear."

Finally, daily sunscreen application is essential when preparing your makeup canvas.
Recommending a lightweight, broad-spectrum product with 30 to 50 SPF, Valerie explained: "Harmful UV radiation can disrupt the skin's moisture barrier, leading to extreme water loss and provoking photoaging.
"Use it under your makeup products to protect your skin from sun damage, especially on high UV index days."
Also stressing the importance of prepping your skin before using makeup, a second expert spoke to GB News about the pre-foundation step she swears by, warning women they could be "adding years" to their faces if they skip it.
Beauty guru Saffron Hughes claimed that neglecting this essential pre-makeup task results in creasing, unwanted texture and exaggerated fine lines.
