While beautiful, glowing skin is partly down to genetics, there are also plenty of things women can do for a fabulous complexion.
From adding skin-boosting ingredients to your water to updating your cleansing routine, the skin care strategies at your fingertips are endless. According to one expert, rethinking your night-time routine may be the answer.
Founder of skin care brand Mettalusso, Christine Flagler, spoke exclusively to GB News about the pre-sleep step for "the best skin of your life".
The expert stressed the importance of "leveraging the most important time when our skin heals the most - overnight".
'Use exfoliating products at night, not before putting on makeup'
GETTY IMAGESChristine advised: "Use exfoliating products at night, not before putting on makeup. A better skin surface will look fresh for the day, restore a youthful glow, reduce the appearance of spots and fine lines, and allow makeup to go on more smoothly and last longer.
"It will also enable you to use fewer skin care products during the day, which is beneficial because most serums and lotions degrade the performance of colour makeup - that's why there are so many complaints of a makeup look falling apart by lunch."
Exfoliation is essentially the practice of "stripping off skin", as defined by the experts at Nivea.
Every 30 days the skin naturally sheds dead skin cells, but if some escape shedding, "we're left with dull, dry, flaky patches and clogged pores". Exfoliation combats this.
The skin care practice should be done at night so you don't expose your skin to free radicals and sun damage directly afterwards.
The skin experts at Nivea confirmed that exfoliation has extensive benefits.
Benefits of exfoliation
- Removes dead skin cells
- Stimulates blood flow to flush out toxins
- Brightens and improves the appearance of skin
- Encourages skin turnover, resulting in brighter skin
- Improves the absorption of moisturisers and serums for hydrated skin
- Helps prevent clogged pores which can cause blemishes and breakouts
- Long-term exfoliation can increase collagen production to boost skin’s elasticity
It's important to note that how often you exfoliate will depend on your skin type and the products you are using. Consult a dermatologist if you are unsure, and ensure you follow your specific product's use instructions.
Aside from regular night-time exfoliation, Christine also stressed the importance of "using products specifically made for overnight treatment".
