While autumn and winter bring darker, gloomy weather, it is still important to wear SPF every day.

This offers vital protection from the sun, providing both health and anti-ageing benefits.


Many people are not aware of the importance of wearing SPF every day or how much they should apply, Dr Deborah Lee, Dr Fox Pharmacy, said for Cult Beauty.

UV rays are present even when not visible so sunscreen works to block this and the damage the rays can cause.

One way UV rays damage the skin and cause reduce its elasticity, making signs of ageing more prominent.

The professional shared exactly how much you should apply to different areas and how to apply it properly.

How Much Sunscreen to Use

Face and Neck: Apply two teaspoons

Arms: Use two teaspoons in total, one teaspoon for each arm

Legs: Apply two teaspoons in total, one teaspoon for each leg

Chest and Stomach: Use two teaspoons

Back and Shoulders: Apply two teaspoons

Dr Lee added: "Applying SPF should be a non-negotiable step in your skin care regime, even during the winter months.

"However, there are many uncertainties when it comes to how to apply SPF the right way, by following these simple tips you won’t go wrong."

The doctor listed four steps to keep in mind when applying sunscreen to the face and body.

She said: "Before you do anything, shake your sunscreen bottle. This will help break up any clumping that occurs over time.

"Next, use the three-finger rule when applying it to the face. Gently tap the formula all over your face, ears, and neck rather than just rubbing it all on to avoid irritation and to ensure a smoother application.

"When applying to your body, smear small evenly sized dots over all areas exposed to the sun. Gently massage the sunscreen in, until you can’t see it anymore.

"Remember not to forget those sneaky spots that are easy to miss like the neck and the back of your hands and feet.

"If you are heading outside, allow the formula to soak into your skin for at least 15 minutes before heading outdoors."
