Wearing SPF should be a "key" step in your skin care routine

The beauty market is full of lotions and potions promising to give you younger-looking skin, but wearing an SPF could be the most important thing to do.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, an expert shared how this is great for your health and for getting anti-ageing results.

SPF isn't just for summer days, says GP Dr Nisa Aslam and skin specialist from Hada Labo Tokyo, makers of the leading Japanese skin care range.

She told GB News: "Sunscreen should not only be saved for hot sunny days but should be applied every day and should be seen as a key step in a skin care routine.

"Sun damage can still occur when it’s overcast so even on a cloudy day, you should wear sunscreen, ideally SPF 50.”

For the best protection, apply throughout the day when it is sunny. However, a high-factor SPF is still important when it is cloudy.

The expert said: “Sunscreen should protect against UVA and UVB and have an SPF of at least 50. Go for an SPF 50 sunscreen, I recommend and use Hada Labo Tokyo Water-Resistant Moisturising Sunscreen: Face Cream SPF 50 and Sun Lotion SPF 50 format."

The doctor explained it can help "bust wrinkles and help stop the skin ageing". Sunlight causes ageing as UV rays damage the skin, leading to wrinkles and aged skin.

She said a good SPF "helps slow down signs of ageing, such as fine lines, wrinkles and age spots".

This comes as women are warned of overusing another common skin care product that can "destroy your skin barrier" and accelerate ageing".

Using an exfoliator more than three times a week can weaken the skin and even speed up ageing.

"It’s healthy to exfoliate your skin," founder of Sphagnum De-Lux Lisa Kavanagh said.

"But doing it too often can destroy your skin barrier which can lead to dryness and irritation - ultimately causing accelerated ageing." Instead, the expert said "exfoliating three times a week should suffice".

The expert gave more tips for anti-ageing and how to put together a skin care routine, suggesting women use the rule of three.

Lisa said: "The rule of three is crucial in skin care, as using too many products at once can lead to chronic inflammation which is a significant trigger to skin ageing.

"This can result in a breakdown of collagen and elastin, which can cause wrinkles and sagging."
