An expert advised using retinol as part of your evening skin care routine

Having a skin care routine is very important as we age and knowing what ingredients to include is crucial.

An aesthetician spoke exclusively to GB News about what products people should use for their skin.

Skin care expert at Skin Krush Jeannette Dunne said: "Retinol is a powerhouse skin care ingredient.

She said: "It's clinically proven to promote collagen production to fight fine lines and wrinkles, it increases skin cell turnover, evens out skin tone, improves acne and oiliness in the skin and reduces open pores."

Jeannette advised only applying retinol as part of your nighttime skin care routine.

She said: "Apply two to three times a week as tolerated to repair skin. Only use a small amount, start slowly maybe once per week and build up your tolerance to the ingredient.

"If you overdo it you will be red, dry and may even see peeling, so it's important to introduce it slowly.

"If you were to add one product to your skin care routine it would be to introduce retinol. It's the most powerful of all the skin care ingredients and can be transformative for your skin."

A cleanser with ingredients like glycolic and salicylic acid helps "clean normal to dry skin and oily congested skin".

The expert explained: "These are both fruit acids and molecularly are small enough to penetrate the skin, pushing dirt, dead skin cells and excess oil from the skin leaving a clean clear surface so you can apply your skin care products."

The cleanser should be used as part of your nighttime skin care routine, alongside an LED light mask for 10 minutes, "three to five times a week when not applying retinol".

Jeannette explained: "It gives your skin an extra boost for collagen production. The red light helps to reduce redness and pigmentation, stimulates natural collagen production for a smoother complexion, and diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles."

Aside from using the correct ingredients, if you have oily skin, make sure you are using "a clean face cloth".

The aesthetician recommended: "Change your pillowcase every night to avoid sleeping on old oil and bacteria from the previous night.

"Cleanse or wash your skin every night. This is the time when the skin goes into healing and repairing mode, it can't do this effectively if we have not removed the grime of the day."

Another skin care expert shared exclusively with GB News three steps to follow in the evening for the perfect routine.
