Using the correct skin care products will give your face a glow and help the fight against looking older.
Skin expert, Mark Solomos spoke exclusively to GB News on the importance of adapting skin care products and routines as we age, with particular attention needed for different areas of concern in over 40s and 50s.
The key to maintaining healthy skin lies in understanding these age-specific needs and responding with appropriate care techniques and products.
Mark shared that using retinol-based products, particularly at night can help women significantly.
Vitamin C and hyaluronic acid are great in evening out skin texture and tone
GETTYThe expert said: "In your 40s, it is good to be using retinol-based products to help reduce sebum production and stimulate collagen as this is when many women experience a fluctuation in hormones due to the perimenopause phase.
"The collagen and elastin fibres break, thicken, stiffen, clump together, and lose their elasticity so you can look to incorporate peptides which help to stimulate collagen."
Mark said that often, the first signs of ageing occur around the eyes so women should look to use an emollient formula which contains antioxidants or retinol.
The expert said that women will see the best results with these products if they apply them at night.
Another product for women to consider is a vitamin C serum with hyaluronic acid as it plays a crucial role in skin health.
Mark said: "Vitamin C can really benefit the skin because of its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants not only help combat the elements responsible for the visible signs of ageing but also can calm skin.
"Therefore, vitamin C boosts your skin's collagen production to give you firmer, more plump skin and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Research tells us that vitamin C may help reduce UV damage.
"In addition to your normal skincare regime, I’d recommend using a vitamin C serum which is rich in antioxidants. It can help minimise pores, and even out skin texture and tone."
Mark added: "Hyaluronic acid is found in many skin care products and naturally occurs in the human body. The substance works as a magnet for moisture, helping your cells retain as much of it as possible so that your skin feels and appears hydrated, plump and healthy."
The expert said that it can be incorporated into both morning and nighttime routines with various other products people like to use.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
When entering your 50s, Mark stressed the importance of focusing on often-neglected areas that show signs of ageing.
Two products he advised using are a moisturiser and SPF to look after your hands and neck.
"Remember to look after your hands and neck as these areas are extremely thin and delicate, so likely to age far quicker," said Mark.
Women have also been told of one skincare step they need to do once a week to "see results and expect a "glowing" complexion.
