Moisturiser is hailed as an essential product for radiant and youthful skin, but although it is widely used, not everyone is using it correctly.
A dermatologist took to TikTok to share how skin care enthusiasts can get the most out of their moisturiser and enjoy its maximum benefits.
Moisturiser, as described by the skin gurus at CeraVe, is a "cream or gel-textured skincare products which contain a blend of humectants and emollients".
Humectants "draw in moisture from the air and surface layers of skin and retain it", while emollients "help to trap moisture in skin and aid in softening skin texture through rich hydration".

Regular moisturising helps combat dryness, which can exacerbate signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles, and dullness. It also helps strengthen and restore the skin moisture barrier.
According to dermatologist Dr Sarah Gee (who goes by @dermatologee on TikTok), the "biggest mistake" people make with moisturiser is applying it to dry skin.
Speaking to her viewers, she asked: "Do you sometimes feel that when you apply moisturiser it doesn't sink in or doesn't work? Well, you might not be using it right.
"You actually want to apply moisturiser when your skin is a little wet."
To soak up all the benefits of moisturiser, the dermatologist revealed the ultimate skin-friendly routine.
She advised skin care enthusiasts to take a shower, then gently towel-dry using a cotton towel. Within 15 seconds of this, they should apply their moisturiser to "trap the water".
According to the expert, this simple hack "makes all the difference" and provides more long-lasting benefits.
The experts at personal care brand Nivea confirmed that moisturising is an effective way to combat dry skin.
Sharing how to get the most out of your body moisturiser, the skin gurus stated: "Moisturisers work best on damp skin as it locks in the water, which boosts hydration and water levels in the skin.
"To get maximum benefits from your moisturiser, it is best to apply it soon after stepping out of the shower, when you towel-dry and are no longer sopping wet."

The same can be said for moisturising the face. "We recommend applying moisturiser straight after you wash, to lock in the moisture and prevent your face from becoming dry," the experts explained.
Choosing a moisturiser that caters to your specific skin type and concerns is essential to maximise its benefits, so consulting a dermatologist or other skin care expert is always wise.
In a recent deep dive, GB News revealed the ancient skin care technique praised for its lasting improvements in skin tone and texture.
