The right products can protect against ageing

Skin care experts are urging Britons to maintain their sunscreen routine throughout winter, warning that harmful UV rays remain a threat even during cloudy weather.

Despite the sun being less visible during typical UK winter conditions, specialists emphasised that skin damage can still occur without proper SPF protection.

The experts particularly stress the importance of daily moisturising with SPF-infused products, especially for vulnerable areas like the neck and hands.

This winter warning comes as experts note that cold weather can leave skin particularly susceptible to damage and dehydration.

Founder of Sphagnum De-Lux Lisa Kavanage emphasised the critical nature of winter sun protection.

"It's vitally important for everyone to use sunscreen in winter," she said. "Neglecting your skin in winter exposes you to UV rays which can contribute to premature ageing and in serious cases, skin damage."

She warned that winter conditions can be particularly harsh on skin health.

"We also advise moisturising throughout winter as the bitter cold air can result in a breakdown of collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for keeping skin firm and youthful," the expert explained.

She recommended using moisturising products with built-in SPF protection to simplify skin care routines during colder months.

Cold winter air can severely impact skin health, leading to increased dryness and potential long-term damage.

Without proper moisturising, skin can become dehydrated, resulting in the development of fine lines and wrinkles, particularly noticeable on the neck and hands.

The combination of outdoor cold and indoor heating can be especially harsh on skin at this time of year. Experts noted that this seasonal dryness can cause a breakdown of essential proteins in the skin, affecting its firmness and youthful appearance.

To combat these effects, specialists recommended using heavier moisturisers to provide adequate protection against the harsh conditions.

They have outlined five essential winter skin care tips for optimal protection. Experts recommend moisturising both morning and night, explaining that morning application maintains hydration while night-time use aids skin regeneration.

Daily use of SPF-infused products is crucial, even in winter, to prevent premature ageing and protect against dark spots. The specialists emphasise including hands and neck in skincare routines, as these areas are often overlooked yet prone to accelerated ageing.

A thicker moisturiser is recommended for winter to combat the effects of cold air and indoor heating.

However, they caution against over-application, warning that excessive moisturiser use can lead to breakouts and unwanted shine.
