Sainsbury's has started to roll out the changes

Sainsbury's has updated the packaging on its own-brand toilet paper and kitchen roll to help cut back on plastic waste.

It will replace plastic packaging with paper on 27 relevant products.

Shoppers will be able to dispose of the fully recyclable packaging at home.

This is not the first product update the retailer has made to become more sustainable.

However, it is the biggest change it has made for the reduction of single use plastic in stores.

It aims to save some 485 tonnes of plastic, or over 55 million pieces of plastic.

Customers will start to see changes this week, with all lines to be updated by February 2024.

Director of product and innovation Claire Hughes said: “We sell thousands of our own brand toilet tissue and kitchen roll products every week and by switching from plastic to paper on these household staples, we’re able to make a significant impact in reducing plastic.

"This change alone represents the biggest plastic reduction in our grocery products so far and our customers can expect many more changes to come.

"Collaborating with our suppliers to develop innovative packaging solutions to reduce plastic is a major key priority for Sainsbury’s, helping us to achieve our ambitious target of increasing recycled content and recyclability.”

Last year, Sainsbury's introduced double length toilet rolls which featured double the number of sheets on each roll.

The change helped to cut back on plastic packaging by 30 per cent.

This comes as Sainsbury's rolled out more major packaging changes in more than 400 stores.

This included cardboard hangers and cardboard cartons for laundry detergent.

Tesco has also made a huge service update for shoppers in nearly 100 stores.

This aims to help customers find the right products for their skin care needs.
