Sadiq Khan is aiming to eliminate all deaths and serious injuries from London’s roads by 2041

Drivers in London were reportedly hit with £20million worth of fines last year from Transport for London’s network of 20mph roads.

Sadiq Khan and TfL have been vocal in their support for the new 20mph speed limits on key routes around the capital.

As part of the Vision Zero scheme, Sadiq Khan is aiming to eliminate all deaths and serious injuries from London’s transport network by 2041.

A number of measures have been introduced to deal with this including Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, red routes and the 20mph speed limits.

New data has shown that motorists were fined at least £20million for breaking 20mph speed limits last year, The Telegraph reported.

Drivers who are caught speeding could be hit with a minimum fee of £100 and three penalty points on their licence.

It is believed that at least £20million will have been levied in fines, a massive increase from at least £687,000 in 2016 when Sadiq Khan was elected Mayor.

During the same time period, the number of London roads with a 20mph speed limit has grown from 25 per cent to over 50 per cent.

Transport for London has announced a number of new 20mph speed limits this year with another 28km of roads seeing speed limits cut in March.

This was followed by a further 65km of lower speed limit schemes to cut road danger across Greenwich, Kensington and Chelsea, Lewisham, Southwark, Wandsworth, Merton, Bromley and Lambeth.

In September, Walking and Cycling Commissioner Will Norman said lowering speeds was “one of the most important things we can do to reduce road danger”.

Greg Smith MP said the figures were “another kick in the teeth” for motorists in and around the capital.

The MP for Buckingham added: The Mayor’s anti-car agenda continues apace... Most people will find it absurd that drivers are being fined at such low speeds.”

There are plans to reduce speed limits from 30mph to 20mph on an additional 87 miles of London’s roads by May 2024.

Keith Prince, the Conservatives’ transport spokesperson at the London Assembly, said: “A 20mph speed limit should only be imposed where there is a clear need to improve safety on a particular stretch of road.

“Sadiq Khan and some London boroughs have forced through 20mph limits on roads that don’t need it against the wishes of residents.”

The transport authority for London said it would continue to monitor measures to see whether further vehicle speed reduction speeds are required.

A TfL spokesperson said: “In London, 95 per cent of speed limits on roads are set by the boroughs.
