Diners in Rick Stein's fish and chip shop will need to fork out for condiments

A side of tartare or curry sauce is a must when ordering fish and chips, but doing this will cost if visiting Rick Stein's fish and chip shop.

Some diners have been left annoyed when visiting the shop in Cornwall.

Stein's Fish & Chips is a dine-in or takeaway shop based in Padstow, Cornwall.

Those who visit are charged £16.95 for fish and chips if choosing cod or haddock.

Lemon sole will set visitors back by £17.95, while sea bass is the most expensive option at £18.95.

Those who want any condiments while dining in will be faced with an extra charge of £2 per item.

This includes tartare sauce, gravy, mayonnaise, aioli, mushy peas and curry sauce.

These are available for £1.75 for those visiting the takeaway shop.

Visitors ordering poppodoms, mango chutney or raita will also need to pay £2 more.

It is common for sides to cost more, but sauces can come free at restaurants.

Some visitors took the Tripadvisor to share their disappointment with the charge.

One diner praised the food but gave a four out of five rating due to the extra expense.

They wrote: "The only reason I dropped it a star is the price of sauces."

Another added: "When we paid the bill we discovered that the tiny pot of mushy peas was £2 extra, as was the tartar sauce as was the curry sauce. Unfortunately I don't think we will be returning."

Another added it was "nice but too expensive" and complained of paying £2 for a "tablespoon full" of tartare sauce.

The charge has been increased to cover rising costs and the shop has "reluctantly" done so.

A spokesperson for Stein said: “Our homemade condiments using Rick Stein’s special recipes are prepared in Padstow by our team of chefs.

"Food inflation, energy costs, along with rising wages, has driven up the cost of production significantly.

“We have held our condiment prices since 2020, but with skyrocketing costs, we have reluctantly, along with many others, had to pass on some of the costs to our customers.”
