It can be very costly decorating our homes, particularly with the constantly changing trends that we see on TikTok and Instagram.
And, with the rising cost of living, do we really want to be spending our hard-earned money on ridiculously expensive homeware?
You can still update your home so that it feels new, fresh, and stylish, but without having to break the bank, saving hundreds, or even thousands, in the process.
These are five affordable ways to transform how your home looks and feels.
Constantly changing trends can make it expensive to decorate your home
GETTYDisplay framed wallpaper for new artwork
You can easily create a collage wall of unique artwork by framing samples or offcuts of wallpaper. Use a white mount to give the picture a more refined look, and explore different colours and patterns for a fun and creative finish.
This means you only have to buy a few frames, or you could even use ones you already have, and then you can enjoy your crafty work through the mixture of different textures and colours.
Upcycle furniture for a new feel
You could easily update your home with furniture you already own. This is through the power of upcycling. Perhaps you have a wooden chest of drawers that looks a little tired and outdated or a console table that has seen better days. Simply sand it down and give it a fresh lick of paint and varnish.
You can even achieve a more rustic look in the way that you paint it, with a more distressed finish. And don’t stop there either, you can change the knobs and handles on furniture to easily create a more contemporary and unique look.
Creative painting can transform a room
Another way to totally change up the theme of a room is by using a creative paint base. You can transform a room just by painting the ceiling, and it is increasingly common to use bright, bold colours to lift the eyes upwards and therefore create the illusion of a bigger space.
Why not add more dimension to a room by painting the walls, but only half. What I mean by this is painting halfway up, so that there is a contrast between the lower half and top half, and it means your furniture can sit amongst a brighter colour without it overwhelming the room.
A personal favourite is simply painting doors and door frames, adding interest to the entrance of a room. You could also paint your skirting boards in the same colour and continue the theme throughout the space.
Layout is key
Sometimes, we don’t realise the potential of a room with the items we already have. If our layout isn’t quite making the most of a space, it can limit its ‘wow factor’.
Try and follow the natural light of a room. This would mean avoiding putting larger furniture in front of a window, and try and centre the furniture around something, such as pointing towards your television or placing it around a coffee table.

Be strict too, and don’t fill up a space with too much furniture so that it risks feeling small and poky. If you’re limited in space, make the most of your walls and use wall shelves for more storage and decor display.
The power of curtains
Finally, by only changing the curtains in a room you can transform the whole space. Stop thinking about changing up the wallpaper or sofa or carpet and instead change the curtains. These are so prominent within our decor, yet we don’t realise what a large part they play.
If your room feels drab and flat, change up your curtains for some bright, bold and colourful material.
Perhaps change them to wall-to-ceiling curtains, too, as this can make a space feel larger and grander. Curtains are a very simple way that we can achieve character in our decor, and it saves lots of money compared to redecorating the whole room.
