Experts have offered their top tips for protecting homes against burglaries

As the summer months draw to a close, thousands of Britons will be enjoying their last getaway of the season.

Properties are targeted for many reasons so it's imperative that homeowners know what these are.

Not only does it make it easier to safe-proof a home against break-ins, but it also guarantees peace of mind for holidaymakers.

According to experts, motion sensor lights and cameras act as major deterrents to those eyeing up homes.

Experts at Household Quotes said: “Nighttime is the most popular choice for burglars, this is because the household will most likely be asleep and it’s easier to hide from nearby witnesses.

“They’ll often go door-to-door checking for ones that are unlocked, or they will snack a window, put their hand through and open the door from the inside.

“Good deterrents include automatic lights which turn on when movement occurs. Security cameras are also beneficial, a thief will think twice before entering a home after seeing one.”

The average price for motion sensor lights can range between £10 and £50.

Prices will vary depending on the style and model of lights, however.

The average smart doorbell - which features a camera - typically sets buyers back £160 for the gadget and installation.

Property expert at Household Quotes Joshua Houston said: “Our homes are our safe space and if someone invades that it can be very traumatising.

“However, there are many opportunists out there who are looking to make quick money committing robberies.

“Follow the tips I’ve provided and you might be able to prevent your property from being burglars.

“Even if it’s doing something as simple as not posting where you currently are on social media.”

According to the expert, social media posts - particularly ones containing information about your whereabouts - are a major tip off to burglars.

The warning comes as 81,019 robberies were reported between 2023 and 2024 in England and Wales alone, marking an increase of 6,000 on the previous year.

If you know your house will be empty for several consecutive days, it would help to have a friend or family member go around to turn different lights on on different days.

Other effective systems that put burglars off include secure window locks, indoor lights on a timer and double door locks.

These protective measures are particularly important for isolated properties, where burglars don't face the risk of being caught by neighbours.
