As the New Year is in full swing, many Britons will be left feeling miserable inside homes that may feel bare and uninspiring after the festive period. Here interior expert Kate Conrad, who is the owner of luxury homeware brand Madison & Mayfair, shares her top tips for updating your home after Christmas

Christmas is now long gone and Britons are charging fully ahead into the new year. With this may come a new look for your home.

Updating lighting, textures and tones, fully using wall space and having a spring clean can all improve your property.

Ensure you have soft lighting in place

A lot of our festive decor involves lighting of some kind, whether it’s fairy lights on the tree or special Christmas lights and lanterns on display.

When we take these down, our home can lose its ambient touch, which is why I recommend having some lighting in place amongst your usual decor. From stylish lamps scattered around to candles and string lights, you can easily create a home with an atmosphere.

As a tip, it’s best to use warm-toned light bulbs to create a cosier, more inviting feel - which is particularly helpful in January when we are adjusting to the new year after Christmas.

Incorporate different textures into your decor

If you feel like your home seems bare and lacking character after Christmas, my best interior trick is mixing textures. With varying textures, you can achieve a style of decor that appears ‘fuller’, offering more to the eye.

Utilise woven wicker baskets, embroidered cushions and textured wallpaper, along with woollen throws and patterned rugs to enhance the feel of any room in your home.

Warm tones can make your interior feel more homely

Without the warmth of Christmas decorations in your home, it can feel difficult to know how to create a warm feeling in your home when you’ve taken them down.

I’d recommend taking some time to redecorate at the beginning of the year to give your home a new burst of life.

Change up those cold colours for warm tones, whether that involves giving your furniture a lick of paint, painting your walls, or simply changing up your accessories.

Utilise wall space with prints and artwork

I often find that once we take our decorations down it helps us realise how much unused space we have available.

Where we might have pinned decorations up on our walls, why not now use that space for decor all year round?

You can inject so much more life into your home with prints, artwork, and photographs, giving your house a flavour of your personality and making it feel more like home.

Start the year with a spring clean

I think the final tip has to be a spring clean. There’s nothing quite like a deep clean and tidy in the new year to make us feel refreshed after Christmas.

A lot of us accumulate lots of new things throughout the year, and of course at Christmas time, so having a sort through our storage cupboards, clearing out any unused items, and cleaning the areas of our home that don’t get regular attention can really clear our minds ready for the year ahead.
