With spring finally here, an interior designer has shared her top tips to spring clean your home - and make it more appealing to buyers, potentially boosting its value. Kate Conrad, the founder of Madison & Mayfair, said this is the perfect time to freshen up your home and breathe new life into tired décor

Nature has come out of hibernation and so should your home. Spring is a great time to spring clean your interiors with colours, textures and accessories which can elevate your space and boost its value.

Your home should reflect your unique style. Whether that’s rustic charm or modern sophistication, the principles to picking a new look stay the same no matter what your personal tastes.

The focus should be on good quality items and - as with all spring cleans - decluttering. This opens up your home and ensures that the changes you make won’t be some temporary trend which can age your property.

If you have the opportunity, rooms like kitchens and bathrooms are where a real boost to value can be made - but that doesn’t have to be an expensive new suite or kitchen units.

Play with colour

Spring means the return of colour after months of grey, so it’s an opportunity to take some inspiration from nature and bring the outdoors in.

A great way to do this is by playing with sophisticated neutrals and adding a feature wall. This keeps a room feeling light without being boring. Some 2025 colour trends include terracotta and alabaster.

Use storage in your design

In all homes - unless you live in a mansion - it’s space which is at a premium. But forget about boxes under the bed and instead bring storage into your design.

Whether it’s wicker hampers or a sleek wooden chest, open up your living space in style. Built-in shelving is a great way to maximise floor space and show off stylish accessories – and it’s an extra opportunity to use colour and lighting.

Spruce your bathroom on a budget

Bathrooms are rooms which we all want to be clean and sparkling, but a new suite can set you back thousands - and you’ll then need to find a plumber.

Look at replacing tired fixtures like shower screens and taps, as well as a new loo seat to instantly improve the look of this all-important room.

At the same time, a new colour on the walls, fluffy towels, storage jars and shelves can add character and cleaner lines.

Create multi-purpose rooms

With so many people working from home, a room which has a dual purpose can help to boost value. Combining the hybrid function of an office space for work with a study or reading room removes the need to block off a smaller bedroom for work from home days.

It’s a great opportunity to get creative with colours; dark greens or clarets inspired from leather bound books mixed with leafy plants and feature ornaments will always trump a plain, white desk. Finish it with a new interior door to keep out the noise and enhance its aesthetic.

Use your lighting

Proper lighting is a must-have for showing off your home’s best feature. Update outdated light fittings with designs which complement your overall theme and incorporate different types of lighting into your home.

Tall ceilings can manage an elaborate chandelier as a feature piece whereas cosier rooms would benefit from wall lights, floor and table lamps. The 1980s plain shade and 40-watt bulb won’t do your redesign any favours.
