A dark red kitchen or neon green living room may "bring too much drama"

Boosting your property's value does not have to break the bank. A fresh coat of paint could work wonders when it comes to enticing buyers and encouraging them to put in a good offer.

Homeowners were told which three colours would increase their property's value. However, other colours can do quite the opposite, dragging down the value of a home. According to an expert, a dark red kitchen or neon green living room has connotations of "drama".

In a video about paint colours that "kill your home value", an expert from The Paint People said that some shades run the risk of "decreasing your home's value".

The expert said: "We all want a space that reflects our personality, especially day to day when you're getting guests to come over and you can show off the excellent colour palette you've picked. But some colour choices might not resonate with potential buyers.

"And I know you shouldn't make paint colour decisions based on the potential of resale value - unless you have a pretty good idea you're going to be selling in the near future."

For those who are thinking of putting their property on the market soon, the paint expert advised steering clear of certain colours inside the home. It's important to avoid "interior inauthenticity".

The expert said: "Bold colours can be beautiful, but they can also be a red flag for some buyers."

An interior hue that can "bring too much drama" is dark red, specifically in a kitchen. Neon green living rooms are another "drama" culprit.

The expert said: "These might be conversation starters where your friends are like, 'That's kind of fun, but I don't want to stay here for more than 10 minutes'."

For those who are thinking of selling their property, it's important to remember that a potential buyer wants to be able to imagine themselves in the space and see themselves living there.

If a prospective buyer knows they will have to repaint every quirky room in a property, they may be less inclined to put an offer down on it.

Repainting the whole interior of a house could feel like a lot of unnecessary hassle - not to mention costly - for a house viewer.

The expert said: "Remember, the point here is to maximise the return on your investment, not show off how fun and avant-garde you are to potential buyers."

Property sellers should also consider the paint colours on their house's exterior. There are several factors to be aware of.

The paint guru stated: "An off-putting exterior paint colour can be a major turn-off." He advised that homeowners avoid "the colour clash".

"A bright purple house with yellow trim might scream 'unique' to you, but to most buyers, it screams 'repainting project' - and a very expensive one at that," the expert said.

Similarly, going too dark - think dark greys and blacks - can be "imposing, forboding and intimidating", which is certainly not the impression you want a potential buyer to have.

It's also important to remember that trends come and go, so homeowners shouldn't get too bogged down with what's current when selecting paint colours.
