Hampshire, in England, boasts acres of ancient woodland and unspoilt grassland

British horticulturist Alan Titchmarsh has been a poignant figure on British screens for more than four decades.

When he's not in the spotlight, however, Titschmarsh can be found enjoying a slower pace of life in Alton, Hampshire.

He is one of several “present-day celebrities associated with Hampshire,” according to Visit-Hampshire.

The website notes that “the thriving market town of Alton offers a delightful mix of historic buildings and modern shops and arcades”.

“It is well known for its regular Tuesday market day as well as other markets and fairs.”

Among the town's most famous attractions is the Curtis Museum, which houses one of the finest local history collections in Hampshire.

“It [boasts] a wonderful array of objects including the celebrated Roman cup found near Selborne and an impressive Anglo-Saxon buckle,” according to Visit-Hampshire.

“Its childhood gallery is packed with toys, children’s books and dolls dating back to the 18th century.”

Titschmarsh secured a gorgeous farmhouse in the area more than 20 years ago, where he lives with his wife Alison.

Since making Hampshire his home, the broadcaster is often spotted at Broadlands house in Alton, or at their relaxing retreat on the Isle of Wight, where he has a boat.

He and his wife are among several A-listers living in the area, which is also home to the properties of Chris Packham and Noel Gallagher.

What is Hampshire famous for?

The county of Hampshire is predominantly known as the birthplace of Bombay Gin, and the place where Jane Austen lived, wrote and is now laid to rest.

The novelists' house is located in the Hampshire village of Chawton and is considered one of the most important literary sites in the world.

Visitors can enter the inspiring cottage where Austen’s genius flourished and where she wrote all six of her globally beloved novels.

Visitors who wish to take in the landscape can hop on the Watercress Line, which visits four picturesque heritage stations including Ropley, Arelsford, Medstead, Four Marks, and Alton.

According to Visit Southeast England: “Hampshire is home to the New Forest National Park, which stretches across 140,000 acres of ancient woodland and unspoilt grassland.

“It’s one of the most beautiful national parks in the UK and home to the famous New Forest ponies, with dozens of walking and cycling trails to explore.”
