Adding value to your home does not need to be costly, an expert tells GB News

Property prices may have crashed but they have not fallen as dramatically as some predicted.

This could give hope to homeowners looking to sell their property.

While there is no easy way to guarantee getting a sale for the price you want, some home updates could make this more likely.

Surveyor, property expert and founder of Horton’s Group Colin Horton shared his advice exclusively with GB News.

Fewer first time buyers can get on the ladder

He explained a quick refresh of home accessories could be a cheap way to make the house more appealing to buyers.

Colin said: "Try to avoid everything being grey, it’s not 2020 anymore, the houses that sell are those with some character and style.

"Every developer and their son are doing every property grey internally and the market is saturated with grey, too many shades of grey.

"Change up affordable home décor items such as bedding, cushions, and candles."

Following decor trends can be tricky when it comes to selling and the expert suggested colour could add value.

Making sure the property smells as good as it looks can help, Colin continued.

Filling the home with pleasant smells ahead of any viewings will help potential buyers picture themselves living there.

The expert explained: "Never forget the easy wins such as smells.

"Mow the lawn, light a candle and make sure the house is at a nice temperature. These little actions can have a huge impact."

Another good idea is to speak to buyers about the home and share your positive experience there.

Colin added: "Make sure you tell prospective buyers about what sold the house to you.

"Almost tell a narrative of how many happy memories you have had there. People buy into emotions."

This comes as an expert said the "property market is still competitive" despite the house price drop.

An easy garden check could help add more value to a property.
