A doctor shared the best things men can do to prevent balding

For many men, genetically they will be impacted by male pattern baldness but several other factors influence hair loss.

Medical Advisor at Hims UK, Dr Mia Jing Gao explained how men's hair loss occurs.

She said: "Male pattern baldness, the most common type, is primarily caused by genetics and the hormone dihydrotestosterone, which shrinks hair follicles over time.

"However, lifestyle factors such as stress, poor nutrition, and underlying health conditions can also play a role."

Combatting these factors early is incredibly important for men explained Dr Mia, who said men can hang onto their hair if they tackle these problems.

She said: "Addressing these concerns early is crucial, as timely intervention can help slow or manage hair loss effectively.

"Acting early is crucial, as prevention is often easier than restoration. Men noticing hair loss should consult a healthcare professional to explore treatment options."

The doctor offered some solutions for men to consider to combat men's hair loss through the use of topical minoxidil and topical finasteride.

She said: "Minoxidil works by shortening the length of the resting (telogen) phase and stimulating hair follicles to enter the growth phase (anagen).

"Finasteride works by blocking an enzyme called five alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT causes hair follicles to become miniaturised, producing thinner, finer hairs.

"By blocking the production of DHT, topical finasteride can prevent further hair loss and lead to improvement in hair counts."

Whilst these are effective, they can cause some side effects. Minoxidil can cause scalp irritation, headaches and dizziness with finasteride possibly causing a reduction in libido

It is important to consult your doctor before trying these treatments.

Dr Mia said: "Lifestyle changes, such as eating a protein-rich diet with key vitamins like biotin and zinc, managing stress, and maintaining a clean scalp, can also support hair health."

Women have been told too of "a short hair mistake that could age you fast and be a disaster."
