Your full-coverage foundation may not be doing you any favours, an expert told GB News

Women can harness the power of makeup to totally transform their look - as long as they know the right products to use and how to apply them correctly.

A biochemist and certified cosmetologist-aesthetician spoke exclusively to GB News about the best techniques women can employ to look more youthful.

Focusing particularly on women over 50 and how they can use makeup to shave years off their appearance, OnSkin's Valerie Aparovich advised choosing lightweight complexion products.

According to the skin expert, replacing your heavy cosmetics with lighter options may be the way to go to camouflage fine lines and improve general appearance.

While heavier products may provide more coverage than their sheer counterparts, they tend to draw attention to signs of ageing.

Valerie advised: "Swap heavy-textured and mattifying complexion products for more lightweight options like watery foundations and moisturising BB or CC creams.

"Thick, full-coverage foundations can settle into wrinkles, making the lines more noticeable.

"Mattifying ones have a moisture-absorbing impact and can leave your skin looking dry and tight.

"While lightweight complexion-correcting formulas may not provide the same high level of coverage, they will help you achieve a more refined and rejuvenated skin appearance overall."

According to the expert, this simple swap "enhances [the face's] smoothness and offers a fresh, dewy glow".

Valerie also advised makeup users to set their look with a spray as opposed to powder if they struggle with dryness or dehydration, which mature women often do.

She said: "Skip the powder and finish your look with a setting spray. Powders can absorb moisture from the epidermal layer of the skin, which is initially in deficit in these skin types.

"This leaves your makeup looking cakey and emphasises wrinkles and pores as the powder particles set in.

"A setting spray will lock your makeup in place, providing a fresh, natural finish and make the skin texture appear more even."
