"The way we do our makeup should change with age," an expert told GB News

You may have been relying on the same makeup techniques for decades, but according to experts, it's necessary to rethink a few things in your more mature years.

A makeup artist spoke exclusively to GB News about how women over 50 can best navigate their makeup bags to avoid making "common mistakes" that "age" them. She advised middle-aged ladies to ditch their dark, heavy eyeliner.

Makeup artist at FalseEyelashes, Saffron Hughes, stated: "Ageing is a natural and beautiful process, however, you could be adding years to your face just by the way you apply your makeup.

"The way we do our makeup should change with age and by following some professional advice and doing it properly, you can deliver a fresh face."

Addressing common makeup mistakes made by women over 50, Saffron advised ladies to avoid caking on dark eye makeup.

She stated: "Heavy liner can age the eyes in so many ways. Darker colours not only shrink the eyes but can also create darker shadows around them, giving an illusion of tiredness."

But this doesn't mean forgoing eye makeup altogether - simply try a more understated, natural look.

Sharing her top tips for a stellar over-50s eye makeup routine, Saffron advised: "Adding a nude or pale eyeliner in the waterline can make the whites of your eyes pop, therefore appearing more awake.

"Opt for an eyeshadow or thin eyeliner pencil instead of gel eyeliner formulas, as this can transfer throughout the day and settle into fine lines around your eyes.

"Go for a smoky brown eyeshadow on a small pencil brush to get a precise but clear line."

A second makeup guru spoke exclusively to GB News about her top anti-ageing hacks for ladies in middle age and beyond.

Celebrity makeup artist Patty Bell named the eye product "most women can't live without" over 50.

Saffron previously spoke to GB News about the pre-makeup step she swears by - you could "add years to your appearance" if you skip it.

According to the expert, applying products such as foundation and concealer without priming the skin first can highlight signs of ageing.

She stated: "Applying face products without a primer can contribute to fine lines looking more pronounced in addition to creasing, with textured skin peeking through."

In other makeup news, a model shared the mascara technique that makes her look instantly younger and fresher.
