Foundation is one of the most common makeup products out there, so you probably think you have mastered its application.
However, according to a makeup guru, not everyone knows what they're doing when it comes to this staple item. In fact, celebrity and editorial makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes claims that "you're putting it on wrong".
Foundation provides a whole host of benefits, including evening out the skin tone, concealing imperfections, creating a smooth base and providing a matte or dewy finish - depending on the look you're going for.
Because it forms the base of most makeup routines, it's important to get it right for the best results.
Foundation wearers are advised to prime their brushes before application

Katie (who goes by @Katiejanehughes on TikTok) advised makeup enthusiasts to avoid applying their foundation directly onto their faces using a makeup brush.
Instead, they should add the product to the brush, then swirl the brush into the palm of their hand to distribute it, before applying it to their faces.
"This is called priming the brush - remember that," she told viewers.
The expert explained that by getting the product "thoroughly" into the brush and then "saturating" the face with it, you can blend the foundation more seamlessly into the skin.
Employing this step before applying your foundation makes for a more natural look as the product does not cake onto the skin.
What's more, the body heat from your hand will heat the foundation, resulting in smoother application.
Katie concluded: "You will find that you get better wear out of it, your makeup looks even more natural, and it will look like you got your makeup done by a professional makeup artist."
The makeup guru added that this technique works particularly well when your foundation shade is "a little off".
Katie uses a VIEVE foundation brush for her application, although there are countless products out there to choose from.
When it comes to correctly blending your foundation, technique is everything. The makeup gurus at No7 stated: "According to top beauty experts, the trick is to apply sparingly, using only on the areas of your face that need it most. This usually means starting at the centre and working your way out towards your jaw and hairline.
