An expert took women through her foundation routine from start to finish

While makeup isn't essential if you want to look fabulous, learning some savvy techniques certainly can help.

A TikTok creator who describes herself as a "40+ MUA" and specialises in beauty, fashion and lifestyle shared her application method for perfect foundation.

Kerrie Smart (@thekerriesmart on TikTok) took to the social media platform with her top foundation tips.

For "flawless" makeup, the expert advised women to start by priming their skin with setting spray.

Women over 40 should use a buffer brush - think 'light pressure and circular motions'

She recommended choosing a foundation product that has "built-in skin care", meaning it aims to provide both cosmetic and skin care benefits.

Rather than cake on heavy layers, Kerrie told women to go "light" with the product.

As for how to blend foundation in, the makeup artist suggested going for a buffer brush, pushing the product into the skin with "light pressure and circular motions".

While there are many different tools to choose from when it comes to applying foundation, the buffer brush is often highly sought after as it can achieve an almost airbrushed finish.

After foundation, Kerrie recommends using a pressed powder rather than loose powder.

Cosmetics giant L'Oreal Paris described pressed powders as "face powders that come pressed in a compact (similar to blush or powder bronzer)".

It stated: "They often come with an applicator - usually a sponge or a powder puff - and are ideal for on-the-go touch-ups.

"Because the powder is pressed into the compact, the application process is a bit different than it would be with loose powders.

"Rather than sweeping the formula onto your skin, you’ll generally use the included applicator to press or swipe the powder onto areas that need coverage.

"Additionally, pressed powders tend to come in a wider range of shades than loose powders - some are even designed to be used in place of liquid foundation for a full-coverage matte finish."
