Using the wrong moisturiser or a foundation that is too thick can cause you to look older

When applied correctly, makeup can be transformative, taking years off your appearance. If applied wrong, it can cause you to look older.

A makeup artist shared how to "get a flawless, long-lasting finish" by preventing makeup from creasing.

Expert Jeannie Giannone explained on YouTube: "One of the most common reasons your makeup is creasing is improper skin preparation. It is one of the most - if not the most important step - in your makeup routine.

"Choosing a moisturiser is very important because you need to choose one that is appropriate for your skin type."

If you notice your skin is dry, pick a thicker moisturiser to give you "a plump, hydrated look".

Jeannie advised: "For someone who is a little more on the oily side, I would go for something with a bit more of a gel texture. It gives you hydration without any extra heaviness.

"You have to wait for your moisturiser to absorb properly. Give it five, 10, 15 minutes if you can. The more time you give your face to absorb the moisturiser, the better."

By letting your moisturiser settle, it won't sit on the top layer of your skin, which "leads to creasing".

The thickness of your foundation has a considerable impact "as to whether or not you are prone to creasing".

The YouTuber said: "I hardly ever go in full force with a full coverage foundation because that is the one-way ticket to creasing.

"Do not apply your foundation directly from the pump onto your face. It is not doing your makeup any favours. Most foundations today are high-pigmented, which means you need only a fraction. Over-applying not only wastes product, but it gives you less control over your application."

Use your hand as a palette for your foundation, as you have more control and can "strategically place" the areas of your face that require more or less foundation.

Jeannie advised: "Another thing I would recommend is when applying your foundation, keep it away from the under-eye area.

"All it does is add an extra layer of product under the eye, increasing the likelihood of it falling into your wrinkles and creasing."

Another makeup artist named 'the perfect product' to remove dark circles under the eye.

They explained how a colour-correcting eye cream "is the perfect product to use when you want to take the edge off the dark circles".
