Wearing make-up is part of many women's daily routines but they could be making a common mistake that adds years to their appearance

People can use make-up to express themselves, boost their confidence and even hide the signs of ageing.

Women have been warned about common make-up mistakes as these could be highlighting wrinkles.

This is according to experts at beauty and wellness marketplace Fresha who looked at the most common make-up mistakes that people make.

Not blending foundation correctly and not using a primer or prepping skin before applying make-up were among some of the mistakes most people have made.

Using too much concealer was also highlighted, with 50 per cent of people doing this. Making this mistake can be ageing so mature women should be particularly conscious of this, according to the experts.

They said: "This is only emphasized further when you use too much concealer under your eyes, as this can cause your skin to look cakey and cause product to build up in your fine lines, ultimately having a drying effect."

While many people think concealer will hide dark circles, cakey make-up can settle in the fine lines of the skin, highlighting these signs of ageing.

It can also contribute to dry skin. If skin looks dry, it often appears older. This is because dry skin is part of the ageing process.

As we age, skin loses moisture and becomes dehydrated. This can cause fine lines and wrinkles to be more noticeable.

The experts shared skin care mistakes that could also cause "premature ageing" of the skin.

They explained how you apply your skin care products can make a big difference to their effectiveness. Doing this wrong could also cause dryness.

They said: "When rubbing in moisturiser, serums or sunscreen, it’s important to do so in circular motions or to tap it in lightly, as pulling on the skin can make it harder for products to absorb and can cause irritation or dryness."

The experts continued: "Applying moisturising products to your neck and chest is important to reduce signs of premature ageing, as these delicate areas are especially prone to dehydration.

"[Also] Skipping products means you miss out on benefits like removing residual dirt, oil, and debris from the face while applying them incorrectly reduces their effectiveness.

"For example, applying sunscreen before moisturiser rather than after will dilute the impact of your SPF."
