Some 50 per cent of Britons don't know how to store onions correctly

How food is stored can affect how long it will stay fresh for.

Onions can be stored in the cupboard or the fridge, but one way is likely to prolong their shelf life.


Recent research by price comparison site, idealo.co.uk shared most Britons don't know how to best store their produce.

This can cause a lot of fresh food to be thrown away unnecessarily, with half of people not storing onions in the best way.

Food expert and founder of The Full Freezer Kate Hall shared her top tips.

She explained that, unlike most vegetables, it is best to keep onions in the cupboard rather than the fridge.

She said to store them “in a cool, dark cupboard in a mesh bag that allows air to circulate around them”.

This comes after the expert explained potatoes are best stored in the fridge.

It is also important to make sure potatoes are dry before going into the fridge as wet potatoes could be more likely to rot.

Onions and potatoes should be kept apart to keep them both fresh, the expert explained.

She said: "They should also be stored away from potatoes which emit moisture and cause the onions to soften and sprout faster.”

Onions are a great vegetable to stock up on as whole onions can last one to three months when stored correctly.

Once they are cut, they go off more quickly and should be consumed within around one week.

There is often debate over where eggs should be stored to keep them fresh.

Experts explained eggs should also be kept in the fridge, although the placement is important.

Avoid keeping eggs in the fridge door as the temperature will be least consistent there.
