Losing collagen happens as you age. This can cause wrinkles, saggier skin and less elasticity, leading to older-looking skin.
There are some ways to help prevent this, however, from using the right products to having supplements.
Diet changes are another, according to skin care expert at Intrigue Cosmetic Clinic, Amish Patel who explained it is "extremely important".
Speaking exclusively to GB News, he said: "Cut down on sugar in your diet, it's your skin's collagen's worst enemy."
Removing sugar from your diet helps collagen production
GETTYLarge amounts of sugar can age the skin, and even lead to a lack of volume in the face. This causes wrinkles and saggy skin.
Amish said: "You don't need to be helping your skin age; it does it naturally, so cut down on the sugar in your diet if you have a sweet tooth.
"Try to opt for fresh foods instead of processed in your diet. Stick to single-ingredient foods with fibre and protein, emphasising fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat."
Try to do all of these changes within moderation, the expert said. Focus on small tweaks to begin with so you are more likely to stick with it.
Aside from diet, investing in good skin care products helps to prevent collagen breakdown. Look for products with retinol and ceramides inside of them.
Amish said: "My favourite ingredient for anyone over 35 is retinol for its transformative qualities on the skin.
"Ceramides are brilliant for retaining moisture and making the skin more elastic and help reduce fine lines."
A study published by the National Library of Medicine said: "We found that human ceramide mixture promoted the formation of collagen fibres and microfibrils (fibrillin) which affect the elasticity of the skin."

Over 35's should consider investing in retinol and ceramides
GETTYApply your skin care products in the morning and night with the morning focused on preparation and the night for repair.
Amish said: "At night, you are taking advantage of your skin's natural cell renewal process. When applying, try to layer each product."
Start with the lightest consistency first such as serums and apply the heaviest creams last.
The expert added: "Leave at least a minute between each layer to allow it to absorb into the skin."
