A long line of contour underneath your cheekbones could be majorly unflattering

The right makeup techniques can make a woman look instantly younger than her years. However, the wrong application can highlight and accentuate signs of ageing.

A makeup expert divulged how women over 45 can apply their contour and blusher to look their very best.

If applied correctly, contour can add dimension and sculpt the face to perfection. If applied incorrectly, however, it can make you look gaunt.

Makeup artist Mia (@itsmemiamakeup on TikTok) shared how women over 45 can properly apply contour to flatter their faces, plus what not to do at all costs.

Mia offered a simple hack to women over 45. She captioned her TikTok video: "It's natural that we need to re-evaluate each decade. Let's work against gravity to lift and soften with our new techniques."

According to the expert, middle-aged ladies should refrain from using a particular contour technique.

Using a contour stick to draw a long line starting underneath her cheekbones, Mia explained that this can make the cheeks look "hollow".

Instead, ladies over a certain age should draw a very short line above their cheekbones to give the cheeks a "lifted" effect.

The contour product should then be "pushed into the skin" using a makeup brush rather than applied downwards. This ensures it doesn't "draw the face down".

Because sagging skin is an inevitable part of ageing, makeup techniques that create the illusion of lifted features are ideal.

For the same reason, the expert advised women over 45 to change their blusher placement.

While younger ladies are taught to smile and then apply blusher to the apples of their cheeks, this technique does not work in the same way for more mature women whose faces have dropped a little.

In other makeup news, an expert named the product that will "age" you if applied too much.

The professional makeup artist explained that because we have a lot of movement around the eyes, it will "crease and crack and just look very dry".
