The secret to taking years off may be swapping tight waves for a loose, more relaxed style

The right hairstyle can do wonders for a woman's look, making them appear fun, vibrant and youthful. However, the wrong hairstyle can do quite the opposite.

Renowned hairstylist and hair expert Brad Mondo shared the popular hairstyle that many women won't realise is ageing them prematurely. He advised ladies to steer clear of tight, refined waves, opting for a more relaxed look instead.

In other hair news, women over 50 have been told to avoid a "cheap" and "ageing" hairstyle.

Brad prefaced his advice with an important note: "You can do whatever you want with your own hair."

However, for women who are keen to take a few years off their age, there are some simple things they can do to look more youthful.

Many women like to style their hair in waves, but according to the expert, there's a way to get this right and a way to get this wrong.

Brad said: "The wave is the go-to look if you want to look young. It's trendy, it's always going to be trendy, and it's always going to be cute.

"The tighter the wave, the older you're going to look. The more refined the wave, the older you're going to look."

If you want to style your hair in waves whilst still maintaining a youthful look, go for a relaxed style.

He continued: "The looser and less defined the wave is, the younger you're going to look."

According to the expert, an overly cultivated, manicured style is prematurely ageing - but can be easily fixed.

To achieve loose, relaxed waves, Brad recommended using a curling iron with a large barrel if you have longer hair.

Ensure that it's set to a low temperature so you can create little "crimps" as opposed to "super tight waves that are all uniform and ugly".

For straight-haired ladies who want to curl their locks, the expert said there is also a right and wrong way to do this.

He said: "I'm not talking about natural curls. I'm talking about things you do to your hair that make you look older."

Brad stressed the importance of breaking your curls up with a brush or your fingers. He encouraged ladies to go easy on the hairspray and make sure to "rake out those curls".

He explained that tight curls tend to age you because "it's something we used to do way back when". He added: "It's come out of style for the past 10 years."

Similarly to loose waves, loose curls will "make you look so much younger and refreshed".
