Skin care enthusiasts have often highlighted the benefits of SPF

The importance of sun protection for maintaining a youthful appearance cannot be overstated, with UV rays one of the primary culprits behind premature ageing.

Although it cannot reverse signs of ageing, it may reduce the appearance of wrinkles slightly.

A skin care aficionado who goes by Gin Amber Beauty on TikTok, is one of many who have highlighted the anti-ageing benefits of SPF on her channel.

In a recent clip, the TikToker claimed SPF was instrumental in improving the texture of her skin, helping her achieve a youthful complexion without Botox or fillers.

“I’ve been an aesthetician for almost 15 years and I’ve been in the skin care industry for almost 20 years," she told viewers.

“Let me tell you how sunscreen helped me with that because before I did not wear sunscreen," she said, showing viewers a picture of her skin taken a year prior.

She admitted that while sunscreens are the gold standard of anti-ageing skin care, some ingredients can damage the skin, so packaging should be checked before splurging out.

Dermatologist Melissa Piliang, MD, offered advice on choosing a sunscreen that works and how to avoid the ones that don’t, on behalf of the Cleveland Clinic.

“Your skin is exposed to two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB,” the expert explained.

“The SPF number tells you how much protection the sunscreen provides against UVB rays, which are the main cause of sunburn.

“But SPF doesn’t tell you how much protection you’re getting from UVA rays, which can cause skin damage and skin cancer.”

The expert pointed out that adequate application is equally important, as skimping on sunscreen leaves the skin vulnerable to damage.

Dr Piliang advised that most adults get at least one ounce of sunscreen, roughly equivalent to a shot glass, for adequate coverage of face, neck, arms and legs.

“Use about a nickel-sized dollop for just your face," the expert added.

The expert noted that for days when you're outside for only a short period, most people can get away wearing a minimum SPF of 15.

“But if you're going to be outside for more than a few minutes, choose at least SPF 30," added Dr Piliang.

Although daily sun protection is an essential step in any skin care routine, consumers should avoid toxic ingredients where possible.
