Wearing SPF year-round can slow down visible signs of ageing
People may shake up their skin care regimes in winter to account for the harsher weather.
However, one product you should not skip at any time of the year is a high-factor SPF.
This is according to Dr Rayhaneh Zahedi, a dermatology speciality doctor at Quality Health Care Ltd and ambassador for medical grade skin care brand AlumierMD.
Many people know the dangers UV rays can cause to our skin and health, but they may not realise how damaging they can be in the winter months.
Apply SPF, even during the winter
GETTYDr Zahedi said: “UVA rays are around us all the time. Whether you are sitting in the sun in midsummer or inside on a rainy wintery afternoon, you are at the same risk of UVA ray saturation.
"They can radiate through cloud and rain and reflect off surfaces. Even if you don’t go outside, you need to be aware of UVA rays, as they can penetrate through glass.”
While the effects of this may not immediately present themselves, it can cause the accelerated ageing of your skin.
The expert continued: “Unlike a sunburn, you don’t always see the damage from UVA rays straight away.
"However, in 10 years’ time, the impact of the rays may show on exposed areas such as your face.
"Regardless of your skin type, you should be concerned about UVA rays. This is why sunscreen is essential every day, 365 days a year.”
So, how does the damage present itself? The expert said it can vary depending on your skin tone, but the UV rays often cause fine lines, wrinkles or pigmentation.
She continued: “For fairer skin, UVA rays deplete and cause the breakdown of collagen and elastin, which fuels lines and wrinkles.

SPF can help slow down the ageing process

"However, in darker skin tones, sun damage can increase the risk of hyperpigmentation, which looks like dark marks on the skin."
This comes as a dermatologist details the importance of using this on your neck as well as your face, as the neck can often give away your age.
They said: "We often pay attention to the face when doing skin care, but the neck also needs care."
