Vitamin C and pigment inhibitors have been labelled holy grail ingredients in anti-ageing skin care

Skin changes reflect lifestyle and genetic factors, but interventions can work wonders for slowing down signs of ageing.

The good news is that it's never too late to adopt an anti-ageing routine. It helps to know which products to use, however.

An aesthetician in her late 30s recently highlighted two products that have significantly helped her.

Kristin, who goes by @skinbykristin on TikTok, said she wishes she had started using pigment inhibitors and vitamin C earlier in life.

The expert said: “Let’s go over two products that I wish I had started using at the age of 20. Preventing skin issues is much easier than repairing skin issues.

“The product that I wish I would have started earlier is a pigment inhibitor. Two per cent of your collagen production drops each year.

“Pigment inhibitors get to get in there and keep the melanocytes at bay.

“The earlier we start on a product like this the better because we are training those melanocytes not to produce."

Put simply, pigment inhibitors are a class of compounds that reduce the production of melanin - the pigment responsible for giving skin its colour.

This means the compounds ultimately can reduce the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

The second highly recommended anti-ageing agent is vitamin C, according to Kristin.

“The next one is controversial and that is vitamin C," she said.

“Vitamin Cs are studied, tested and are backed by data. There is truly nothing like it.

Vitamin C has a unique ability to neutralise free radicals

“If you are not a fan of vitamin C, you probably have not found the one that is right for you. Vitamin C also improves how your SPF works."

Vitamin C is a superstar ingredient in skin care because of its unique ability to neutralise free radicals.

This prevents many age-related problems including tired-looking and dullness in the skin, maintaining a fresh and youthful complexion.

Because it has some ingredients that can help it act as a barrier to the sun, experts recommend applying the serum in the morning.
