Britons have been told one product is essential to use every day in winter

The weather can affect our skin and many people may change their skin care routines during the colder months.

While thicker moisturisers may be more beneficial in winter, there is one product that should not be swapped out at this time of year.

This is a good SPF, as sun damage can occur even as the days draw darker.

Skin care expert and co-founder of the Harley Street Skin Clinic Lesley Reynolds shared the importance of SPF.

Wear SPF, even in winter

She said: “To put it simply, SPF stands for sun protection factor. It’s a way to measure sunscreen’s ability to protect our skin from sun damage, sunburn and health issues such as melanoma.

"The higher the number SPF, the longer you are able to stay in the sun, wearing an SPF of 50 for example would mean you’re able to stay in the sun 50 times longer than you would if you went outside without protection."

While the sun is not as obvious during winter, harmful rays can still cause sun damage, including premature ageing. The expert continued: “It’s a common misconception that lower temperatures can prevent sun damage but this isn’t true.

"Even on those colder days when the sun is shining, you can still experience sunburn and sun damage.

"On cloudy days around 80 per cent of sun rays still break through the clouds, which is why we must continue to apply SPF products every day, even during the winter, to prevent any unwanted damage to our skin.

"Wearing a daily SPF will help protect your skin from those harmful UV rays and help us maintain healthier skin."

A good sunscreen will have an SPF of 30 or above. Applying this in the morning before putting on other products or make-up can be beneficial.

"It also helps with premature ageing, reducing hyperpigmentation and keeping your skin tone looking even and healthy, slowing down the skin’s ageing process."

Another way to achieve younger-looking skin is by staying hydrating and following a healthy diet.

An expert shared two types of drinks that can help you to look "10 years younger" and give skin a "healthy, radiant" glow.
