As we age, our skin develops sagginess, wrinkles, and dryness due to the depletion of collagen and moisture levels.
A skin care routine with the right products can be the answer for women looking to rejuvenate their skin. A doctor spoke exclusively to GB News about the "hero" product they must include in their routines.
The head of scientific research and technology at Oriflame, Dr Leve Visdal Johansen, recommended serums as the "number one" product for a skin care routine.
Dr Johansen said: "They are typically a lighter texture packed with a concentration of targeted actives.
'Serum should be seen as the super engine that could really bring a positive change to your skin's appearance'
GETTY"If your moisturiser's role is to cover the key basics such as hydration and barrier protection, then the serum should be seen as the super engine that could really bring a positive change to your skin's appearance."
Serums can increase collagen production, reducing the appearance of "wrinkles and sagginess" on the skin.
The doctor said: "It can target the loss of hyperpigmentation from sun exposure or hormonal changes, blemishes or simply maximise that glass skin look. Serums are your best friend."
To go with serum, "several actives are claiming to do [benefit skin], and the most well-known is retinol".
The doctor recommended applying retinol as part of your evening skin care routine as it "loses potency in daylight and might also accelerate skin sensitivity when worn in the sun."
Alongside retinol, the doctor said: "Vitamin C is an active and well-known supplement for boosting collagen, but it can also be inappropriate for sensitive skin."
A study published in the National Institute of Health supported the doctor's position on vitamin C.
It noted: "Preclinical studies demonstrated that vitamin C has the potential to accelerate bone healing after fractures, increase collagen synthesis, and reduce oxidative stress parameters."

The doctor recommended using serum and retinol in your skin care routine
GETTY"Cleansing your skin" is an essential daily task "to leave a clear base" before applying your products.
Dr Johansen explained: "While you sleep overnight, bacteria, sweat, and dirt can settle on your face, leading to a clogged, pored, and gloomy skin texture.
"While some people with a drier skin type might feel that the morning cleansing step makes them feel drier, it's all about finding a gentle cleanser which buffs away the impurities while respecting skin lipids and moisture levels."
The doctor recommended choosing a cleanser that is formulated for your skin type.
