The skin undergoes inevitable changes over time, with wrinkles, sagging and dryness becoming common concerns as collagen and moisture levels deplete in the body.
For women looking to rejuvenate their complexion, a skin care routine that incorporates strategic ingredients could be the answer.
A doctor spoke exclusively to GB News about the "hero" product they must include in their routines.
Dr Leve Visdal Johansen, head of scientific research and technology at beauty and personal care company Oriflame, claimed that serums should be considered the "number one" skin care product.
'Serum should be seen as the super engine that could really bring a positive change to your skin's appearance'
GETTYThe expert said: "They are typically a lighter texture packed with a concentration of targeted actives.
"If your moisturiser's role is to cover the key basics such as hydration and barrier protection, then the serum should be seen as the super engine that could really bring a positive change to your skin's appearance."
Serums can increase collagen production, reducing the appearance of "wrinkles and sagginess" on the skin.
The doctor said: "They can target the loss of hyperpigmentation from sun exposure or hormonal changes, blemishes or simply maximise that glass skin look. Serums are your best friend."
In terms of the most useful actives to look for in serums, several claim to benefit the skin. The most "known is retinol".
The doctor recommended applying retinol as part of your evening skin care routine as it "loses potency in daylight and might also accelerate skin sensitivity when worn in the sun."
Alongside retinol, the doctor said: "Vitamin C is an active and well-known supplement for boosting collagen, but it can also be inappropriate for sensitive skin."
A study published in the National Institute of Health supported the doctor's position on vitamin C.
It noted: "Preclinical studies demonstrated that vitamin C has the potential to increase collagen synthesis and reduce oxidative stress parameters."

The doctor recommended using serum and retinol in your skin care routine
GETTYAs well as using serums and active ingredients, the expert stressed the importance of cleansing the skin as an essential daily task. A proper cleanse creates "a clear base" before applying your products.
Dr Johansen explained: "While you sleep, bacteria, sweat, and dirt can settle on your face overnight, leading to clogged pores and a gloomy skin texture.
"While some people with a drier skin type might feel that the morning cleansing step makes them feel drier, it's all about finding a gentle cleanser that buffs away the impurities while respecting skin lipids and moisture levels."
The doctor recommended choosing a cleanser that is formulated for your skin type.
