A strategic skin care regime is essential for a youthful, healthy complexion, an expert told GB News

Sagging, dryness, dullness, fine lines and wrinkles are all inevitable signs of ageing as collagen and elastin levels in the skin decrease.

While these changes are normal and nothing to be ashamed of, many women are keen to maintain a youthful complexion as long as they can.

A skin expert spoke exclusively to GB News about "how women over 50 can look younger" by implementing the right skin care regime, lifestyle habits and diet. She placed particular emphasis on daily sunscreen application.

Tricia Trimble, founder and president of sun and skin care brand Suntegrity, stated: "For women over 50, maintaining youthful skin starts with a gentle routine.

"Use a creamy cleanser infused with vitamin C to cleanse without stripping moisture and incorporate regular exfoliation with enzymes or AHA/BHAs to remove dead skin cells and reveal a fresh glow.

"Keep skin deeply hydrated with serums and moisturisers rich in hyaluronic acid and nourishing oils."

While many people only wear it when it's particularly hot and sunny outside, Tricia stressed that sunscreen is a non-negotiable all year round.

"Most importantly, apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 mineral sunscreen daily to protect against UV damage," she advised.

As well as increasing your risk of developing skin cancer, harmful UV rays can cause physical signs of ageing including fine lines and wrinkles, sun spots, redness due to dilated blood vessels and leathery skin.

Women should apply sunscreen to both their face and body, ensuring they do not neglect their hands, neck and chest, which often show the tell-tale signs of ageing.

Tricia swears by the Suntegrity Impeccable Skin SPF 30 for "youthful, radiant skin", describing it as a "powerhouse product that not only provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection but also delivers skincare benefits that support mature skin".

However, there are many SPF products out there tailored to specific skin concerns. For example, some are formulated with mature skin in mind.

For those who want to harness the anti-ageing power of makeup, Tricia advised opting for cream-based products.

She explained that "these provide a natural, dewy finish, enhancing radiance without settling into fine lines".

Tricia continued: "Lifestyle choices are just as essential for vibrant skin. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and nourish your body with a diet rich in unprocessed, antioxidant-packed foods, omega-3 fatty acids and essential vitamins."

Skin care enthusiasts should not overlook the importance of sleep, with the expert recommending between seven to nine hours of "quality" shut-eye per night.

She concluded: "Engage in regular exercise to boost circulation and promote a healthy glow, and practice meditation or yoga to manage stress and maintain overall well-being."

A second expert spoke exclusively to GB News about the best skin care practices for a youthful appearance.

Dr Paul Anastasiades named the supplement that can increase skin elasticity and protect against premature ageing.
