Drinking more water is an easy way to boost your skin barrier

An expertly crafted skin care routine is essential for a youthful glow at any age. However, the benefits of a healthy lifestyle in conjunction with this should not be overlooked.

GB News spoke exclusively to a quinquagenarian who swears by both. Leanne Kampfe maintains a vibrant complexion with the help of excellent skin care practices, generous water intake, sleep and healthy eating.

Leanne founded the beauty and jewellery company All that Glitters and describes herself as the "glow-up expert". Over the years, she has learnt some effective anti-ageing hacks.

She said: "I'm 51, but people generally think I'm in my low to mid-40s."

For a youthful look, the quinquagenarian revealed that she "tries to drink a lot of water" every day. This is widely recognised as an effective, not to mention free and easy, skin care hack.

Adequate H20 consumption is known to have a positive effect on the skin barrier, which, as defined by Dermalogica, is the "unsung hero of healthy-looking skin, working as a protective layer by keeping hydration in and irritants out".

The article 'Effect of Amount of Daily Water Intake and Use of Moisturiser on Skin Barrier Function in Healthy Female Participants', published in the National Library of Medicine, examined the benefits of both drinking water and moisturising the skin.

In a study that looked at 43 women, "results suggested that the degree of water intake may be related to improved skin barrier function".

However, experts added that the "application of additional moisturisers had more favourable impact on skin hydration as compared to additional water intake".

According to the findings, hydrated skin cannot be achieved through generous water consumption alone: it must be supplemented by the right products for maximum benefits.

When it comes to skin care, Leanne has been diligent about it for decades, revealing that she has used "quality" products since her 20s.

Quality skin care products usually contain active ingredients which cater to specific concerns. Some of the most expert-approved actives are vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, collagen and retinol.

Leanne said: "My current beauty routine includes daily skin care, primarily using SeneGence products, as well as a weekly facial I give myself and a more elaborate monthly facial that I also give myself."

Other lifestyle strategies the 51-year-old implements to stay youthful are getting enough sleep, regular exercise, and enjoying a healthy diet.

"I'm lucky to have my mom's genes too," she concluded, "as she also looked a lot younger than her actual age - and still does."

GB News has spoken to several women who look younger than their years, and while some of this is down to luck, another common denominator is skin care saviness.

One skin care enthusiast approaching 50 shared the "gentle" method that helps her look decades younger.

A second named the "anti-ageing secret weapon" she credits for her ageless beauty.
