Going for a pixie cut without considering three fundamentals could be detrimental to your look

The right haircut and style can make you look years younger than you are. In the same vein, the wrong haircut and style can age you prematurely.

Justin Hickox, who has been a hairstylist for almost three decades, shed light on the "hair mistakes that age you faster".

The expert spoke about short hair and a common error women with pixie cuts can make.

He shared three questions to ask yourself before going for a chop that can help you determine the right cut for you.

The expert said: "I've been a licensed hairstylist since 1995 and I've owned my own salon since 2000."

He revealed that one of the lessons he has learned from "decades behind the chair" is that choosing the wrong pixie cut can be ageing.

Those who have made the mistake need not fear though. It is "very simple to fix" and "makes a huge impact".

Justin said: "There's been a huge push for short hair. Now I think some of this is probably being pushed by the 'bixie' haircut, which is essentially a cross between a bob and a pixie.

"But it's very important to understand your face shape and your hair texture to ensure you get the best pixie shape for you. You also need to know what to stay away from."

Women going for a pixie cut may make the mistake of liking a style on a model but not recognising what it will look like on themselves.

Justin said: "Simply finding a picture of a pixie that you like and then telling your stylist you want this cut could be a full-on disaster."

To avoid making the mistake, the hairstylist recommended having the answers to three questions in your head: What do I like and dislike about my face? Is there anything I am currently struggling with regarding my hair? How short is too short?

Justin said: "I didn't say face shape because there are so many nuances to that. Realistically, allowing yourself and your stylist to determine together what you like and dislike about your face and then what your face shape is is a much safer way to approach it."

Women considering a pixie cut should also ask themselves if there is anything they are currently struggling with regarding their hair. This may include thinning, textural changes and growth patterns.

Finally, women should identify what feels too short for them. Take pictures of pixies you like and pixies you don't like.

Justin concluded: "You take all of that information and you go to your stylist. Then, the two of you can decide what makes the most sense and what pixie is the best for you."
