GETTYMaria continued: “The role of nutrition in preventing the signs of ageing cannot be overestimated.
"Olive oil is generally regarded as one factor that has contributed to the famous Mediterranean diet, featuring powerful antioxidants such as vitamin E and polyphenols.
"These substances act against oxidative stress, which causes damage to skin cells and promotes ageing."
The expert discussed the benefits of consuming olive oil, but it could also work when applied topically.
A small study published in the scientific journal Medicina reviewed this in skin care in 55 women and 25 men during one month.
The results showed an average 23 per cent reduction in wrinkles for all who took part, due to the phenols in olive oil.
Maria explained it can also work to improve the hydration and elasticity of your skin, which both minimise how visible wrinkles are.
She added: "The addition of high-quality extra virgin olive oil to your diet will definitely help improve skin hydration, enhance elasticity, and protect against environmental damage.
