Using an eyelash curler can have a major anti-ageing effect, a makeup guru advised

As women approach their more mature years, many are keen to turn back the clock on their appearance.

A professional makeup artist shared how women over 60 can achieve this with just one pre-mascara tool.

Some of the most common signs of ageing in the skin around the eyes include sagging, fine lines and wrinkles, crow's feet, under-eye bags and dark circles.

The eyelashes are also affected by ageing, losing their enviable length and thickness as time goes on.

But according to makeup artist and hairstylist Glam Girl Gabi, there's a simple way to "open" your eyes and give them a "lift" - making you look "a lot younger" in the process.

She told mature women: "The first trick is to curl your lashes. Curl those babies every single time you do your makeup.

"Never skip this step - it takes one minute and it will give you a serious, serious eye lift."

An expert at cosmetics company L'Oréal shared how women can use a lash curler for maximum benefits.

How to curl your eyelashes

According to the experts, an eyelash curler works best on clean, bare lashes - so make sure to remove any residual eyeliner or mascara.

The best way to curl eyelashes is to start at the base of your lashes, as close to your lid as you can get without pinching your eye.

Then, close the clamp over your lashes and hold it for five to seven seconds, ensuring you clamp rather than pull.

Finally, release the clamp and carefully move the eyelash curler towards the middle of your lashes. Here, repeat the clamping motion.

Once your lashes are lifted and full of volume, it's time to apply your eyeshadow, eyeliner and then your mascara.

The experts stressed the importance of using a clean tool - think mild soap and water or a makeup wipe - and replacing it as needed.
