Middle-aged ladies may want to swap "harsh" shades for ones that "restore their natural lip colour"

The right lipstick colour can make you look vibrant, youthful and radiant, while the wrong one could age you prematurely.

A fashion, beauty and fitness creator for women over 50 shared the three colours middle-aged ladies might want to swap out.

Kay from Dressed for My Day with Kay Harms said on YouTube: "As we get older, strange things happen to our face every day. You wake up and there are new lines, new wrinkles, new spots and new issues."

The influencer explained that as we get older our lips get a little thinner and also develop fine lines that cause our lipstick to feather and bleed into our skin. We may also develop deep lines around the corners of our mouths.

"But there are some things we can do," said Kay. The beauty enthusiast shared her lipstick tips to "help you look your best and feel confident".

The makeup fan said: "If we want to look younger, we want to stay away from really harsh colours."

She advised that claret, raisin and bright red may be a no-go if you're looking to take a few years off your look.

Kay continued: "That's not to say you can't use those but if you want to look more youthful and more vibrant, you want to wear a colour that kind of restores your natural lip colour."

She recommended opting for pink, rose and "pinky nude" shades. She said: "You don't want to go with a nude that really just looks like your lips because that's not adding anything. You want to add some of that youthful colour back to your lips."

In her video, Kay revealed that her lipstick colour of choice is the Pure Color Hi-Lustre Lipstick in shade Candy by Estée Lauder. It is currently available on the official website for £34.

Kay said: "I love it. It's bright pink, so it goes with a lot of things in my wardrobe, but it's not neon pink."

She revealed that she is constantly asked which lipstick she is wearing - "people are stopping me in real life and asking me my lipstick colour".

Before applying your lipstick though, Kay advised picking up a lip liner. Ladies should ensure it's relatively sharp before outlining their lips, then bring the colour slightly into the middle of their mouth.

The effect is that your lips should look a little "plumper" and "fuller".
