Going overboard with concealer could be making you appear older than your years

Makeup can have an anti-ageing, transformative effect if applied expertly. However, the wrong application techniques can make a woman look older than her years.

According to a makeup artist, wearing too much concealer can make your face appear aged. For a youthful look, it should be applied sparingly.

Professional makeup artist Ali Andreea stated: "There is nothing wrong with being old, with ageing. It's a completely natural process - don't let society and social media tell you otherwise.

"However, when you add years to your face because of makeup, that's when I kind of have a problem with it."

Ali told women that wearing too much of any makeup product can appear ageing - "especially concealer".

The expert advised against applying concealer in a 'V' shape underneath the eyes, explaining that it works for photoshoots and videos but is perhaps too much for daily life.

She said: "It's different in real life. In real life, if you're going to apply too much concealer, it's going to look really bad.

"Because we have a lot of movement around the eyes, it will crease and crack and just look very dry. And honestly, nobody needs that much concealer in real life."

On camera, this concealer application looks great - "but you just have to trust me, this in real life will not look good".

While the 'V' method does ensure plenty of coverage, the concealer is likely to crease throughout the day when the face moves.

The correct way to apply concealer, according to the makeup artist, is to dot "tiny" amounts of the product on the face.

Go for areas you would like to "bring more light to", for example, at the corners of each eye and around the shadows of the nose. These dots should then all be blended out using a brush.

This method somewhat lessens the dark circles under the eyes but doesn't totally cover them in the way the 'V' method does.

The expert explained: "I'd much rather wear a very light layer of concealer because I know that it will make me look more youthful.
