Retinol creates tightening, exfoliates the skin and can even thicken the collagen of your skin

It's not just the skin on your face that droops with age - you might find that your neck starts sagging too.

A plastic surgeon told older women and men how they can "lift" their necks without any invasive treatments. He recommended investing in a retinol.

Dr Anthony Youn - known as America's Holistic Plastic Surgeon - told anti-ageing enthusiasts: "I'm here to help you look incredible through the right foods, clean skin care and the latest in non-invasive treatments."

While some people opt for a facelift (rhytidectomy) to tackle loose skin around the lower half of the face and neck, it's possible to lift and tighten this area at home.

The plastic surgeon told older women and men that they might want to consider using a retinol cream - retinol is a form of vitamin A.

He warned that while prescription-strength retinol is Tretinoin, this should not be used on the neck as it's "definitely too aggressive".

"But retinol is a great anti-ageing cream that long-term can create some tightening, exfoliate your skin, and can even thicken the collagen of your skin."

Dr Youn said that there are loads of over-the-counter products out there that contain retinol.

Health and beauty retailer Boots said: "In the skincare world, the word ‘retinol’ is often used as a catch-all for products containing a retinoid.

"Retinoids come from vitamin A and there are many different types, all with different strengths. Retinol is actually just one type of retinoid, but you may have heard of others such as retinal, retinyl palmitate, or retinoic acid.

"Considered a ‘gold standard’ of skin care, retinol can really work wonders, which is why this popular ingredient has made its way into so many skincare products in recent years."

As for what skin-boosting benefits the ingredient has, "the real question is, 'what benefits doesn’t retinol have?'".

Boots described retinol as "an all-rounder that works by increasing the rate of skin cell turnover and promoting the production of collagen".

"Because of this, retinol helps exfoliate the skin and unclog pores whilst improving the look of fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and pigmentation." For those considering using retinol, Boots has a guide on how to use it effectively.

You can also lift your neck by investing in an instant lifting cream. These create a "temporary lift" and work very fast, however, they do not provide a long-term solution.

Dr Youn warned that if you're going to use this, they can leave a filmy residue behind. It may also be tricky to apply makeup over, so practise first.

Another way women can look younger is by experimenting with their hair. Ladies can look 10 years younger with a hair tip that 'works wonders'. Expect to be "rejuvenated instantly".

Exercise can also be incredibly beneficial. Women can "slow their ageing by nearly 10 years" with a habit that keeps you slim.

In other anti-ageing news, a daily drink is a "quick win" way to get younger-looking skin with a visible 'glow' in your 40s, 50s and beyond.
