Women in this age group might want to consider a long haircut with layers

Women in their 50s, 60s and 70s can shave years off their age with the right haircut. According to a hairstylist, it can "transform" a mature woman's look.

Glam Girl Gabi took to YouTube to share one of her favourite anti-ageing haircuts for women in this age group.

She said: "Today I'm going to tell you that the key to looking absolutely gorgeous in your 50s, 60s and 70s is a great head of hair, and in particular, a fantastic haircut."

According to hairstylist Gabi, long hair can look beautiful on mature women, despite popular opinion that it does not frame the face and instead drags it down.

She said: "I bet you didn't see that one coming. And I bet you've been told by a hairdresser before that if you're older, you shouldn't have long hair. But this is something I deeply and fundamentally disagree with."

The hair expert said that mature women who are blessed with a beautiful hair texture and thick hair can look "incredibly feminine and incredibly sexy" with longer hair.

The reason why women over a certain age are often deterred from having long hair is that "the eye gets drawn down".

As women age they inevitably find that their face loses volume and their skin becomes saggy and wrinkled. A haircut that draws the eyes down can accentuate this. Gabi explained that this can make you look more "tired" and less "radiant".

But women in middle age and beyond can look gorgeous with long hair if they follow a few simple tips.

Gabi suggested that women cut their hair just a little bit, so it rests at the shoulder or just below.

"Then you want to add layering to it," the expert advised. "What's going to happen when you add layering around the face around the face and throughout the entire perimeter of the hair is you are going to expand the hair. And when you expand the hair you create movement and width."

She explained that this causes an anti-ageing chain reaction. Width in the hair creates the illusion of width in the face, and width equals volume, which in turn equals "volume, youth and radiance".

Once you have your face-framing long haircut sorted, Gabi advised adding even more volume through styling techniques.

Curls and waves are very effective in creating volume. Pinning the hair during a blowdry is also an effective tool.

Older women should not be put off by current trends that are in style now - these looks are not reserved for the young.

Rather, modern looks will make mature ladies appear "fashionable" and "in with the times".

Older women who want to look younger should steer clear of how they styled their hair in the 1980s and 1990s because this will give away their age.

In other hair news, women with grey hair can look "better" with a haircut that is "stylish, youthful and easy to upkeep".
