Teasing your hair is an easy, effective way to create a more youthful look

Many women focus on their skin care routine when it comes to looking younger. However, the right hairstyle can work wonders too, taking years off your appearance.

A fashion influencer for women over 60 tried a hairstyle that can supposedly help you drop a decade. To look "10 years younger", Michelle tried two styles: teasing her hair, then teasing her hair into a half-up-half-down style.

Michelle from Michelle Shelly Style / Fashion Over 60 previously worked in the fashion industry and now provides her top tips for women.

The style enthusiast was inspired by a video she saw about hairstyles that make you look younger over 40 - and wanted to see if they worked for ladies over 60.

Trying out one of the suggested looks, Michelle added plenty of volume to her do to ensure her hair didn't rest flat on the top of her head.

She said: "I don't have great volume on the top of my hair. I'd like to - I've got plenty of hair - but it does tend to take a bit of effort to get it off the crown of my head."

She revealed that usually she adds volume with tricks such as blow-drying her hair upside down and using specific products.

This time, the over 60s fashionista teased the top of her hair "to try and get a bit of height". After teasing, Michelle smoothed it slightly with her hands. The style can be kept in place with hairspray.

Michelle's verdict was that "it's good to have a bit of volume on the top" of your hair.

Another way to achieve volume is to tease the top of the hair and then work it into a half-up-half-down style. This creates the illusion of more volume.

While the influencer wasn't too sure about this look, worrying that it made her look "dated", it is universally thought that having body and movement in your hair makes for a more youthful look.

Thinning hair is an inevitable part of ageing as the hair follicles gradually shrink, resulting in finer strands.

Additionally, the growth cycle of hair follicles becomes shorter, leading to decreased hair density. Unsurprisingly, adding volume offsets these natural changes.

The hair experts at John Frieda offered some tips for - "gently" - teasing your hair for "all-day volume". They said: "It works best on slightly dirty hair, but if your hair’s freshly washed, use a root booster to add texture.

If you choose to tease your hair for 'all-day-volume', do this gently using a comb

"Split your hair into sections and using a comb, start gently 'pushing' hair from the middle of the section further up towards the root. You want to create a natural-looking volume, not tangles, so go slowly and repeat several times on each section until you’ve reached your desired volume.

But there are plenty of ways women can create volume in their hair for a more youthful look without having to reach for a teasing comb.

It's important to start with a helpful hair-washing routine. Invest in a volumising shampoo and conditioner and avoid using conditioner on your roots as this can weigh the hair down.

Blowing your hair upside down can also work wonders. This technique dries the hair away from the scalp - just ensure you use a heat-protectant spray.

For a quick fix, women can use dry shampoo in between washes to instantly combat limp roots and excess oil.
