A hair enthusiast claimed: "A new haircut, a new hairstyle or a new colour can really change your overall look"

The right haircut can have a transformative effect on a woman, making her look years younger than she actually is.

Marie-Anne Lecoeur, also known as The French Chic Expert, navigates style over 60, offering wardrobe, skin care and hair hacks. She advised that mature women can look younger by sporting a "shorter" haircut - it has a "magical" effect.

She said: "A new haircut, a new hairstyle or a new colour can really change your overall look. This alone could make you look 10 years younger - easily."

Marie-Anne's top tip works for women who have long hair. While she acknowledged that nothing is wrong with longer locks, the hair enthusiast claimed that these can have an ageing effect on women over 50. This is because longer hair "pulls the face down".

Shortening it, on the other hand, has the opposite effect: it frames the face and draws the eyes upwards.

But this doesn't mean that in order to drop a decade, women must chop off all their hair and sport a cropped cut. The fashionista suggested that trimming away a few inches is more than enough.

Those who have very long hair might want to have half cut off, while those with shoulder-length hair could get it chopped to jaw-length.

Women who already have jaw-length hair could opt for a chic pixie cut, which Marie-Anne sports.

The hair enthusiast advised: "I find that short hair can really make your face bounce back."

One hair expert revealed why long hair can have an ageing effect on women.

According to hairstylist Justin Hickox, long, one-length hair can be prematurely ageing.

For mature women who want to maintain their long locks, adding layering is simply a must.

Layers work to accentuate your best facial attributes. They can also give hair more dimension, depth and volume.

The experts at Touch Ups Salon also agree that long hair can be needlessly ageing. They said: "The first big mistake we make is assuming that long hair always makes us look younger. Long hair tends to hide the details of one’s face and important facial features like the lips, nose and smile are important to show off.

"Proportion between hair length and face shape is absolutely necessary. As you age, your face shape changes so it is super important to adjust your hairstyle to your face shape every so often. Your beauty is accentuated by age; don’t hide behind the long hair."

Another way women can turn back the clock is by avoiding the common hair mistake that prematurely ages women - but it's easy to fix.

An expert advised: "Hair theory is real. This is the idea that people will perceive you differently based on how you style your hair. So if you're not keeping up with hair trends, it's making you look older."

A woman in her 60s put this theory to the test, trying out two easy anti-ageing hairstyles to help her look 10 years younger.
