Antioxidant-rich fruits may boost the body's defences against signs of ageing
Modern-day studies are yielding more and more evidence that poor eating habits are crucial causes of skin ageing.
Fortunately, certain foods can reverse existing signs of damage and prevent further degeneration of the skin.
YouTube influencer Vicky Derosa, who built an impressive following sharing her beauty tips, has vouched for the rejuvenating benefits of fruit.
In a recent clip, she told her audience: “My secret to looking younger and living longer? Fruit. That’s right, I eat only fruit from the time that I wake up in the morning until noon.
The antioxidants in fruit fight off free radicals
PA“An orange, banana, or grapes, blueberries. I only have fruit, and then at noon, I have my first meal. That’s my secret and I’m sticking to it.”
The benefits of nutrition for skin rejuvenation have long been an area of interest for scientists, and their findings confirm fruit is a key food group.
A study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that eating more fruits and vegetables can alter skin tone thanks to the presence of carotenoids, which are orange-red pigments found in various produce.
Last year, a body of research published in Frontiers in Nutrition, discovered that the intake of fruit or fruit extract can “effectively improve skin ageing in a number of ways”.
The author of the study, Natalia Dmitrieva, a researcher in the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, commented on the findings.
She said: “The results suggest that proper hydration may slow down ageing and prolong disease-free life.”
Another way fruit helps combat signs of ageing is through antioxidant activity, which essentially fights off free radicals.
The Indonesian health body EMS states that antioxidants are generally present in foods with the highest levels of vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E.
This is why strawberries, blueberries, kiwis, apples and raspberries are considered some of the most rejuvenating fruits.
“Strawberries contain lots of vitamin C, which can capture and neutralise free radicals,” noted the experts at EMC.
