Anti-ageing goes beyond skin care - building muscle may be the way to go

Maintaining a youthful look is somewhat down to luck, but it also has a lot to do with lifestyle habits, diet and exercise.

GB News spoke exclusively to a 51-year-old about how she stays youthful as the years go by. For naturopathic physician Dr Michelle Sands, it's all about weight training.

Michelle, founder and CEO of GLOW Natural Welless, stated: "People assume I’m younger than I am all the time, but the real secret isn't in a bottle or a procedure - it's in how I live. The foundation of youth is strength, resilience and vitality."

For the youthful quinquagenarian, weight training is "non-negotiable". She explained: "Muscle is the key to a fast metabolism, strong bones and a toned, youthful body.

"I lift heavy, prioritise movement, and never buy into the lie that cardio alone keeps you lean."

Strength training improves heart health, boosts mental wellbeing, strengthens joints and keeps bones and muscles strong.

Michelle also enjoys a healthy diet, making sure to choose the best foods to nourish her body best.

"Detox your body and your life," she advised. "Ditch processed foods, avoid endocrine-disrupting toxins in skin care, and drink plenty of clean, mineral-rich water."

Endocrine disruptors interfere with the body's hormonal system. According to CHEM Trust, triclosan, PFAS and parabens are chemicals to watch out for.

Michelle continued: "Healthy fats like avocado, olive oil and wild-caught fish keep your skin plump and your brain sharp.

"Protein - especially collagen-rich sources - is essential for glowing skin, strong muscles and thick hair."

According to the health experts at Holland & Barrett, the best collagen-supporting foods include citrus fruits, fish, chicken, eggs, bone broth, garlic, leafy greens, hazelnuts and broccoli.

Finally, the youthful 51-year-old tries to harness the power of positive thinking.

She explained: "Beyond food and fitness, youthfulness is a mindset. I spend time in nature, get sunlight on my skin and never stop learning - whether it's reading, exploring new ideas or challenging my brain in the gym and life. The fastest way to age is to stop growing.

"Most importantly, I choose a positive outlook. Stress and negativity break you down faster than sugar and sun damage combined.

"I focus on gratitude, passion, and stepping into my power. Ageing is inevitable, but looking and feeling incredible at any age? That's a choice."

Another way women can shave years off their appearance is by being strategic with their skin care.
